Soprano saxist Stephane Spira delivers an impressive post bop album with compatriots Joshua Richman/p-key, Steve Wood/b and jimmy MacBride through eight solid originals. The team sounds relaxed with Richman on piano as Spira’s warm tone glistens on “Kaleidoscope” while the strident chords set a tone for a mix of Bach and blues on “Gold Ring Variations-New York Windows” while “Peter’s Run” has a strong pulse delivered by the rhythm section. With Richman on keyboards, the team gets more soul-CTI’d “Nocturne” with Spira in a sensuous mood” while Wood’s bass delivers a rich groove on “Solid Wood.” Want to see these guys hit LA!
